Our Story
The Founders, Asha Kalale and Bhaskar Kalale, spent over two decades in the San Francisco Bay Area, immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Italian flavors available locally and also during their many travels across Italy through the vineyards and small villages. This journey revealed striking similarities between Indian and Mediterranean cuisines. Living near Napa Valley, they cherished the experience of pairing diverse wines with both Indian and Italian dishes, which further enriched their culinary perspective.
Upon returning to India nearly 14 years ago, Asha and Bhaskar recognized a gap in the Mysuru dining scene—specifically, the absence of fine-dining Italian & Mediterranean options. They noted that many existing Italian restaurants either lacked variety or had overly adapted their dishes to local tastes, diluting the authentic original flavors. Additionally, they saw no establishment dedicated to Mediterranean cuisine. These insights inspired them to create The Sorrento.
Despite receiving advice to diversify beyond vegetarian offerings, they believed there was a significant demand for a restaurant focused solely on vegetarian Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. They also realized that this cuisines also offered a variety of vegetarian options that only needed to be explored and brought to the table. Their mission became clear: to serve healthy, delicious vegetarian food in a fine-dining environment.
